Obamacare Taxpayer Bailout Prevention Act

S. 1726

Number of Co-Sponsors

Bill Description

This bill, originally introduced by Sen. Rubio (R-FL), would repeal the "risk corridor" provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Under the Obamacare risk corridor, the federal government will subsidize insurance losses generated by increased health costs at a rate of up to 80%.

Liberty for All's Position

It is clear that Obamacare is a complete but complex disaster. The bill is a massive government subsidized experiment in risk and burden sharing and has driven up insurance costs and caused millions of Americans to lose their health plans. Due to lower than necessary youth enrollment, the risk corridor will function as a net subsidy, and therefore, as a bailout to the big insurance companies that Obamacare has cost. The taxpayer, on the other hand, will receive little to no support for their rising premiums and is now expected to support the insurance losses of big business. Liberty For All supports real health care reform, a functioning health care marketplace, and opposes crony corporate handouts bargained for and drafted by HMO lobbyists.

Current Status

This bill was assigned to a congressional committee on November 19, 2013, which will consider it before possibly sending it on to the House or Senate as a whole.
